French Canadian Cabin

The first building to be constructed on this land was the original French Canadian Cabin in 1868. Throughout the years this building has been used for wood storage and was even used as an icehouse in 1929. The French Canadian Cabin is extremely important as it is the only one still in existence in this area. At the turn of the last century there were still at least sixteen of them, according to a Springstead pioneer. This cabin represents a style of building, which has almost disappeared from our landscape. It tells a tale of how the early homesteaders provided shelter for themselves and their families. The French Canadian Cabin is slated for 2000 restoration.
